Toro took the lead after six minutes through Longo who headed into the corner past Brivio, even if that strike was cancelled out immediately through Cioffi. There was more joy for the home faithful before the interval as Caridi netted with an almost identical move as he headed home a free-kick cross. There was more drama in the opening period of the second half as Mantova tucked home two penalties. Noselli grabbed the first after Gasparetto was brought down by Brevi. And despite Tarana being dismissed for two yellows, they won another spot-kick in minute 66. This time ‘keeper Taibi fouled Gasparetto and Caridi did the damage with the resulting kick. Torino managed to re-open the two-legged tie soon after when Abbruscato rippled the net even if the home side believed it should have been ruled out for offside. But the goal stood and Toro now have an almighty task ahead of them when they meet again on Sunday night.
