Guidolin was clearly pleased at having signed another striker of proven quality, to follow the capture of fellow Italian Marco Di Vaio of Valencia, and praised Vieri's determination and ambition to make a positive change in his career. "He wants to play and go to the World Cup and he has the right attitude to do well at Monaco," said Guidolin. "We needed a player with his characteristics here and it is good news for us, for football in general and for Italy. I am delighted at his arrival – he is a great player. "Christian gave priority to his desire to play," he added. "If he wanted an easy time of it he could have stayed where he was. "Instead, he made a different choice, broke his contract and came to us. He showed that he is motivated and ready to stand up and be counted – this is very important." However, the former Palermo and Bologna boss – who has earned plaudits in France for the way he has gone about rebuilding the side from the Principality – pointed out that Bobo will have to earn a place in the side. "I can't promise anyone that they will play – neither Vieri or his teammates," he remarked. "If he wants to play and prepares himself as he should he will have an excellent season at Monaco. Here he will find a different championship, a new world." Guidolin added that his new signing will have to be patient at first as it takes time to adapt to a new environment, although Vieri can take heart from the fact that he didn't take long to acclimatise to his surroundings during his only previous foreign escapade.
