Collina decided to quit the game last Monday after being told that he could not officiate in Serie A. Although he was given special clearance to continue for one more year, after reaching the maximum age of 45, he courted controversy this summer. That after signing a sponsorship deal with car manufacturers Opel – the same company who back Milan – which led to conflict of interest issues. But Collina could now be offered the chance to resume his career in Japan's national League. "The level of J-League referees is not low but they tend to be criticised for their judgements," said J-League boss Masaru Suzuki. "If Mr Collina blows the whistle, it will help the fans understand the authority of referees."
