Maternal Physiology The concentration of serum albumin decreases during pregnancy. Late in pregnancy, for example, albumin concentrations may normally be near 3.0 g/dL compared with approximately 4.3 g/dL in nonpregnant women (Mendenhall, 1970). Total albumin is increased, however, because of a greater volume of distribution.
