1. We learn in Junior science that the blood going from the lungs is a different colour to the blood returning after the red blood cells have dropped off their load of oxygen. But what is going on at molecular level, where the action really happens? Max Perutz won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1962 for studies in the structure of globular proteins, together with John Kendrew. Perutz's part was for solving the structure of haemoglobin and elucidating the mechanism of its action. You can read Max
