Manager Joe Torre gave 40-year-old second baseman Jeff Kent the day off on Sunday against the Padres, so entering the game, the starting lineup had no home runs this year, as Kent had the only one for the Dodgers. That changed, though, in the top of the second inning, when Andre Ethier took San Diego starter Chris Young deep for his first homer of the year. Torre said that with Saturday's day game and Monday's night game, Kent -- who has been nursing a healing hamstring -- would have more than 48 hours off. In addition, Kent is 2-for-18 against Young. Kent was replaced at second base by rookie Chin-lung Hu. Juan Pierre again started in the outfield instead of Matt Kemp, this time batting leadoff, with Rafael Furcal batting second instead of the slumping Russell Martin, who was dropped to sixth. Andruw Jones took over Kent's cleanup spot and Blake DeWitt moved up to seventh, with Hu batting eighth. DeWitt said that his right arm was still sore after being hit by a Jake Peavy pitch on the right triceps on Saturday, but it felt better than he expected, considering the way it tightened up after Saturday's game. DeWitt is playing because of Nomar Garciaparra's broken hand, although Garciaparra is swinging a bat again and had several sessions in the batting cage on Sunday.
