Encarnacion has not played since Saturday due to tendinitis in his left shoulder. The move is retroactive to Sunday. The Dodgers acquired Encarnacion from the Florida Marlins on December 13 to upgrade their anemic offense. But while Los Angeles' numbers at the plate have improved, Encarnacion has struggled. The Dodgers entered Friday tied with Pittsburgh for the third-best batting average in the National League at .269, but Encarnacion is hitting just .240 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs. He hit just .222 through May but batted .283 during June to nearly double his average. Last season, the 28-year-old batted .270 with 19 homers and a career-high 94 RBIs. An eight-year veteran, Encarnacion was productive in his 1 1/2 seasons with Florida, recording 27 homers and 128 RBIs in 225 games. After breaking in with Detroit in 1997 and spending five seasons with the Tigers, Encarnacion was traded to Cincinnati in December 2001. To take Encarnacion's spot on the roster, the Dodgers recalled outfielder Chin- Feng Chen from Class AAA Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League.
