Maddux will be inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame on July 17 and his number will be retired during an on-field ceremony prior to a game against the Mets. Maddux joins Dale Murphy (No. 3), Warren Spahn (21), Phil Niekro (35), Eddie Mathews (41) and Hank Aaron (44) as the sixth Braves player to have his number retired. The No. 42 has also been retired throughout Major League Baseball as a tribute to Jackie Robinson. "It's exciting," Maddux told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "You sit on that bench for 10 years in Atlanta, staring at the outfield wall and seeing Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Warren Spahn and Phil Niekro. Seeing all those names every day -- you always wonder what it would be like to face them." Maddux, who retired after last season, is ranked eighth all-time with 355 career wins, went 194-88 with a 2.63 ERA with the Braves from 1993-2003. He earned three of his four Cy Young Awards ('93-95) and 10 of his 18 Gold Gloves while helping lead the Braves to a record 14 consecutive division titles. "Greg is such a large and important part of this organization and his contributions to this team are immeasurable," Brvaes president John Schuerholz said in a news release. "We feel this is a great way to honor him and to thank him for his years here in Atlanta." Maddux will have his number retired twice this season. The Cubs announced earlier this spring that they will hold a ceremony on May 3 to honor Maddux and Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins, both of whom wore No. 31 for the North Siders. Maddux broke into the big leagues with the Cubs in 1986 and won his first Cy Young there in 1992. He also won 38 games during a second stint with the Cubs from 2004-06. --
