That's the message Tom Glavine conveyed after choosing not to test his surgically repaired left elbow and left shoulder with a mound session on Monday. Looking to build some more arm strength, Glavine will play long toss twice this week and then attempt to throw off a mound on Friday. The 42-year-old left-hander hasn't thrown off a mound since having his left elbow and left shoulder repaired during the same surgical procedure in August. "I didn't throw off the mound for any other reason than to be on the conservative side," Glavine said. "This isn't a bump in the road. My arm feels really good. I just felt like an extra day or two of long toss would be the best way to go." When revealing last week that he was hoping to complete his first mound session on Monday, Glavine clearly indicated that he would wait a few extra days if he felt he needed to increase his arm strength. Glavine, whose 305 wins are the fourth-most among left-handers in Major League history, began throwing from a distance of 120 feet just before Christmas and then took a few weeks off before resuming this exercise last week. Knowing that it does him no good to attempt to accelerate the process just to make sure he's ready by the start of Spring Training, Glavine will allow his arm to provide his timetable. In the event that he's still not proven to himself and the Braves that he can pitch by the time camp opens, Glavine is prepared to remain in Atlanta to continue throwing until he reaches a point where it's obvious whether he's healthy or destined for immediate retirement. Glavine's desire is to pitch for the Braves. But if he proves he can pitch and finds that there isn't an available job in Atlanta, he isn't ruling out the possibility of going elsewhere to pitch. --
