Notes: Joneses out few more days Andruw (sore back), Chipper (oblique) won't face Phillies PHILADELPHIA -- The Braves will be without either of the Joneses for the final two games of the current series against the Phillies. But it's obvious that they are much more concerned about Chipper Jones' oblique injury than they are the sore back that should keep Andruw Jones out until Tuesday. "They're both still hurting," Braves manager Bobby Cox said before Sunday night's game. "I'll give them a few more days." When Chipper arrived at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday afternoon, he didn't give Braves head trainer Jeff Porter much indication that his left oblique was feeling any better.The veteran third baseman, who is carrying a career-best 20-game hitting streak, began feeling the pain after taking a swing in the first inning of Friday night's game. Chipper played the remainder of Friday's game in pain and would have been out of Saturday's lineup if rain hadn't caused a postponement. It's too early for the Braves to place him on the disabled list, but the injury is one that could cause him to be out until at least the start of next weekend's series against the Mets at Turner Field. "Anytime you're dealing with an oblique, it can be an extended period," Porter said. When Andruw reported for work on Sunday, Porter was pleased to find the spasms that had bothered the veteran center fielder the previous two days were gone. But there was still some inflammation around the muscles between his shoulder blades. "He's definitely day-to-day," Porter said. Cox says there's a chance Andruw will play in Monday night's series finale against the Phillies, but the Gold Glove outfielder says he'll likely wait until Tuesday, when he'll be able to visit his chiropractor in Atlanta. "I probably won't play in this series," said Andruw, who began feeling the discomfort before Friday's game and the condition worsened when he awoke on Saturday. When he's felt similar pain in the past, the veteran outfielder has visited this chiropractor, who has been able to provide immediate relief. Giles returns: As expected, Marcus Giles returned to the top of the lineup for Sunday night's game. The veteran second baseman missed the previous six games with a sprained left thumb that resulted from a head-first slide into second base on July 14. To protect the thumb, Giles placed a protective padding on his batting glove. Defensively, he says there will only be a problem if a line drive or sharp grounder were to directly hit his glove, where his thumb rests. Giles carried a 13-game hitting streak into the game. Since a slow start, which was party a result of the fractured left middle finger he suffered on April 18, he has shown some recent signs of consistency. During his hitting streak, he's batted .319 and belted three of the six homers he's hit this season. Thomson set for rehab: John Thomson, who has been on the disabled list since July 10 with a sore shoulder, will begin an accelerated Minor League rehab assignment on Tuesday. The veteran right-hander will begin the assignment with a two-inning appearance, wait two days and increase his workload to three innings. Once Thomson works his pitch count up to around 65 pitches, he feels he'll be ready to return to Atlanta's pitching staff. At that time, it will be determined which he would be a better asset as a reliever or a starter. "[My shoulder] feels good," Thomson said. "I just need to get innings and build up my arm strength." Thomson has thrown just 6 1/3 innings since developing a blister on his right middle finger during a June 14 start. The shoulder soreness came in the second start that he made after being activated from the disabled list. Lots of idle time: After enduring a long rain delay in St. Louis on Wednesday, the Braves arrived in Philadelphia around 5 a.m. ET on Thursday. When they arrived at the ballpark for Sunday night's game, they had been in town for more than 80 hours and played just one game. Much of them spent Thursday resting and recovering from the road trip that had just brought them to their third time zone. Saturday was spent preparing for a game that was never played. The postponement came around 6 p.m., two hours after the scheduled first pitch. "It just seems like we're spending a lot of time at the ballpark and doing nothing," Cox said. Coming up: The Braves will conclude their final three-city road trip of the season with Monday's 7:05 p.m. ET game against the Phillies.
