The honorable John M. Gibbons presided over a compelling appeal on Sunday, shortly after deciding to give Vernon Wells his first day off this season. Toronto's manager fully expected a debate from his center fielder, who also serves as the team's union representative. "We're going to give Vernon a day off," Gibbons told the assembled media, moments before Wells arrived in the clubhouse. "He's probably not going to like that, but we figure he can use one." Sure enough, by the end of the media session, a glowering Wells stood in the doorway to the manager's chambers. One by one, the reporters filed past him, knowing exactly what was going to happen behind closed doors. It wasn't a contentious conversation by any means. Wells just wanted to hear his skipper's perspective and lobby a little bit to change his mind. A few minutes later, he was back at his locker, prepared to brief the media on his state of mind. "It didn't last too long," he said about his lobby attempt. "He's trying to get everybody a day off on this trip. Mine fell today." The timing seems perfect, if not overdue. The 26-year-old has struggled with a lingering rib injury over the last week, batting just 2-for-23 on the current road trip. Despite those stats, he's been hitting the ball hard and contributing his normal stellar defense, which explains the team's reluctance to lose him -- even for a single game. In his two fully healthy seasons, Wells averaged 160 games played. He made it through just 134 in 2004, a product of a calf injury that caused a month-long stint on the disabled list. The rib injury isn't expected to last long term, but Gibbons said this was more of a procedural decision than one based on Wells' physical condition. "He needs a break," he said. "It's a day game after a night game, and mentally , it could do him some good. Everybody needs [a day off] now and then." Wells, Toronto's three-hole hitter and clubhouse leader, said he understood the decision, even if he didn't agree with it.
