Ricciardi has to get some of the blame. Suddenly, this seems to be an organization without direction. Ricciardi’s handpicked manager was let go in the middle of the season and he was replaced by someone whose response to getting the job was to not make any changes. Too many at-bats were wasted on players who should have been backups. Josh Phelps and Aquilino Lopez were just given up on, and now Eric Hinske seems to be next. Miguel Batista was taken out of the rotation and thrown into the closer's role. At the very least, Ricciardi should have used the opportunity of a disappointing season to explore the waiver wire and take chances of some players. He didn’t even do that. Carlos Delgado’s departure should at least give Ricciardi some additional flexibility this winter. The Jays need a first baseman, a DH and maybe a third baseman if they’re serious about getting rid of Hinske. Corey Koskie is a player they’re expected to target. They could also afford to take Erubiel Durazo off Oakland’s hands. I have Hinske and cash going to the Padres for Xavier Nady, who would take over at first base. Either a starter or a quality reliever will be signed, depending on where the team decides to put Miguel Batista. I’m guessing he remains a closer. To fill the hole in the rotation, Tony Armas Jr. could be had for a prospect or the team could sign Ramon Ortiz or Hideo Nomo. With Baltimore again acting like a large-market team, the Blue Jays may be left to battle the Devil Rays for fourth place in the AL East next year. At this point, simply saving up and hoping the Yankees or Red Sox collapse three or four years down the line is starting to look like a viable strategy. The Blue Jays will be competitive next year, but .500 is probably the best they can hope for. --
