Blazers assistant Monty Williams to interview for Timberwolves head coaching
position
Trail Blazers assistant coach Monty Williams will interview for the Minnesota
Timberwolves head coaching position, perhaps as early as this weekend,
Williams said Wednesday.
The Timberwolves, who are looking to replace Kevin McHale, received
permission this week from the Blazers to speak with Williams about the
opening. Williams, 37, has been an assistant in Portland for the past four
seasons after spending one year as an intern at San Antonio.
"I'm flattered,'' Williams said. "I'm someone who wants to be a part of a
rebuilding process. But at the same time, I'm still a Blazer. So, there's
initial excitement, but in reality, nothing has changed. I'm looking forward
to the process.''
Williams is widely credited with the development of Travis Outlaw and Nicolas
Batum, using a blend of tough-love and hands-on drilling in his teachings.
Before games he would often work himself into a sweat while guarding and
instructing both Outlaw and Batum on the finer points of the game. He also
would never hold back criticism, gaining respect from the players for telling
it like it was.
A former first-round pick from Notre Dame (24th overall in 1994 by New York),
Williams played 10 seasons in the NBA before knee problems forced him to
retire in 2003. Throughout his playing and coaching career, Williams has been
influenced by Larry Brown, Pat Riley, Doc Rivers, Don Nelson, Gregg Popovich
and Bob Hill.
"I'd love to run my own program,'' Williams said. "Having Nate (McMillan)
pour all this information into me, I'd like to test out all I have learned
and see if I'm ready.''
Williams is a devout Christian who has written a book, "Look Again 52", which
is aimed at helping people explore the Bible on a weekly basis. He carries
himself in a composed manner, and is rarely excitable, which seems to be the
approach he is taking about the Timberwolves opening.
"I'm ready for what I'm not ready for,'' Williams said. "No one goes into a
job ready for it. At this point in my career, I'm ready for what I don't
know.''
Williams, who is married and has three daughters and one son, is one of many
candidates. ESPN reported that Mark Jackson, Sam Mitchell, Bill Laimbeer,
Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw are other possibilities.
