The Oregonian: Are you really surprised? The Trail Blazers yet again did the unexpected in the NBA draft, selecting Victor Claver with the No. 22 overall selection -- their only first-round pick. With college prospects such as DeJuan Blair (Pittsburgh), Wayne Ellington (North Carolina) and Sam Young (Pittsburgh) and international prospect Omri Casspi (Israel) remaining on the board, the Blazers instead went in a surprising direction, settling on Spaniard Victor Claver. 7:08 The Oregonian: The 6-foot-9 forward, who fractured his leg in December and missed most of last season with Pamesa Valencia of the Spanish ACB League, has played his entire professional career in Spain. Before injuring his leg, Claver played in 15 games and averaged 8.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Claver did not take part in a predraft workout for the Blazers this offseason, but he did stop through Portland last year for a workout before the 2008 draft. He withdrew his name from that draft after the workout, but the Blazers liked what they saw. General manager Kevin Pritchard said the Blazers will not bring Claver to the NBA next season and will instead allow him to continue gaining experience overseas.
