Not Made Of Money: Despite popular opinion Trail Blazer owner Paul Allen
isn't made of money, it just seems that way. Like most billionaires, even
multi-billionaires like Allen have taken hefty hits in the current economy
and most of them are playing things a lot more cautious than in previous
years. Allen spoke to Ben Golliver of Blazers' Edge about several topics, one
of which being where Paul stood on spending money in this economy.
"The thing you have to think very carefully about the tax," explained Allen,
one of the league's biggest tax payers over the years, "is the tax and the
cap are what they are. Teams especially in this economic environment are more
cognizant about that and thinking about that more.
"We have salary cap room this year, going up to that salary cap if we found
the right player is something we would do."
No team in the league has been more aggressive on draft day than the Blazers
amassing enormous amounts of young talent in a short period of time.
"I'm the guy that has to hold on to his wallet on draft day," Allen joked
about his team's propensity to buy additional assets over the past year. "I
throw a few ideas out there and hopefully some of those make sense. It's
certainly been the occasion in the last few drafts and I enjoy it."
Depending on how the Blazers manage their pending free agents they could have
as much as $8-12 million in salary cap space, in addition to holding the
24th, 32nd, 38th, 55th and 56th selections in the 2009 NBA Draft.
