The Magic Johnson Award was established in 2001 to recognize the player who best combines excellence on the court with cooperation with the media and fans. He beat out finalists Pau Gasol of the Lakers, Danny Granger of Indiana and Chris Bosh of Toronto. Last year, Roy was a finalist but the Lakers' Derek Fisher won. "We are very proud to have Brandon join a group of outstanding previous winners of the Magic Johnson Award,'' said Doug Smith, president of the PBWA. "As one of the young generation of NBA stars, his ability and willingness to meet the ever-increasing demands of the media with honesty, consistency and respect for the needs of writers and broadcasters - and by extension the fans - makes him a very worthy addition to an impressive list of former winners.'' "Anyone who has dealings with Cheri and her staff, in Portland or at home, can attest to their professionalism, ability to deal with issues the moment they arise and their willingness to help solve any problems that come up,'' said Smith, the PBWA president who covers the Toronto Raptors. The public relations staffs in Phoenix and Toronto have previously won the award. The PBWA comprises writers from newspapers, internet sites and magazines who cover the league on a regular basis. --
