According to independent sources, Portland forwards Channing Frye and LaMarcus Aldridge have accepted invitations to play on a select team that will practice and scrimmage with the national team later this month. Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard on Thursday said nothing has been finalized, but added: "I think there's a good chance." Aldridge, a 2006-07 all-rookie first-team selection, and Frye, whom the Blazers acquired from New York in the Zach Randolph trade, figure to compete for the starting power forward position this season for the Blazers. In other USA Basketball/Blazers news, Greg Oden told me this week that he has not completely eliminated the possibility of competing at the U.S. training camp later this month, which seems necessary if the 7-foot center wishes to compete in the 2008 Olympics. Oden, who this week resumed basketball workouts for the first time since undergoing a tonsillectomy July 14, said he is contemplating the situation and consulting with his mother. "I can't really comment on that too much because we are still in the midst of working things out with USA Basketball," Oden said. "But we're still talking about it." My gut feeling is that Oden will not attend the training camp because he is focused on regaining his stamina and getting into shape for his first NBA season. Of course, the lure of the Olympics must be tempting -- and working with the nation's best certainly wouldn't hurt his conditioning. Oden missed the U.S. minicamp in July while recovering from surgery.
