Conley Sr. on SI.com report: "No truth to it at all"
I talked to Greg Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., when he arrived with Oden at
Portland International Airport today, and Conley firmly denied yesterday's
report on SI.com which suggested Oden may have health issues that are cause
for concern.
The report, which I cited on this blog (see below), said NBA doctors had
flagged Oden with preexisting injuries, including a bulging disc in his back,
flexion in his injured wrist which has not been fully regained, and concerns
about the long-term health of his knees.
But Conley, who acted surprised when asked about the report before saying he
hadn't heard about it, denied that Oden has any health problems that have
raised concerns and said doctors at the Orlando pre-draft camp did not
express any concerns after examining Oden.
"Never heard any of that," Conley said. "No truth to it at all. His wrist is
healed, 100 percent."
Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard also expressed some doubt in the
report, but said Oden's health will be part of their overall examination
during his visit, which includes his first workout in Portland on Wednesday.
"We knew about the question marks, and we're going through the process to
answer them," Pritchard said. "We've answered some of them, and as he gets
here and we get with our docs and, we'll get more comfortable with it. It's
always part of the risk, and that's what we're trying to assess is, how much
risk is involved there?"
Pritchard downplayed some of the health issues that SI.com's report listed,
including the revelation that one of Oden's legs is slightly longer than the
other — a condition that Pritchard said is common among tall people.
"Half an inch -- that's correctable just with an insert," Pritchard said.
And the bulging disc? "I think you guys need to check your sources,"
Pritchard said. "We haven't found that to be the case. But we need to get
these guys in here and have our docs look at them."
One flag was raised when Oden elected to not participate in the bench press
drill at the Orlando camp because of his wrist (the drill tests how many
times players can bench 185 pounds). But Conley said Oden's decision was not
based on physical limitations resulting from his wrist injury or on doctor's
advice against participating in the drill. Conley said Oden has started
benching again as part of his training.
"His bench is fine," Conley said. "It wasn't a doctor issue. It was a Greg
issue. See the problem with Greg and benching is not so much he can't bench
now. It's just that, because of the wrist injury, he hadn't benched leading
up to it. So why do something that you're not trained to do?"
