Fred Jones Talks about Trade Fred Jones, the newest Trail Blazer, will fly home to Portland on Friday, but it's likely he'll see his first action in a Blazer uniform until Monday night when Portland plays in Seattle. Thursday, on trade-deadline day, the Blazers sent Juan Dixon to Toronto in exchange for Jones. I haven't gone through the record books completely, but I can't imagine that there's been a time in franchise history when the team has had five players on the roster who all went to high school within two and a-half hours of Portland. The Blazers now add Jones, who went to Barlow High School in Gresham. Ime Udoka went to Jefferson in Portland, Dan Dickau went to Prairie in Vancouver, Brandon Roy to Garfield in Seattle, and Martell Webster went to Seattle Prep in Seattle. The one point about this trade that isn't getting mentioned enough is what Jones gave up to come home to Portland. NBA players don't leave money on the table, but that's just what Jones did by guaranteeing not to pick up his option year, which would have been worth $3.5 million. Dixon had one more year on his contract than Jones, and the Blazers didn't want to bring back anyone with more time on his contract than Dixon. The Blazers told Jones' agent they'd agree to the deal only if the contracts were of equal length. Jones says his agent advised against doing that, obviously, but Freddie wanted to come home bad enough that he agreed to waive the final year. That's an enormous gamble on his part, and you just don't see players do that. Jones was a guest on our radio show, Trail Blazers Courtside, presented by L.A. Weight Loss, Thursday night. We talked with him about every aspect of this trade, including giving up the option year. He gave us his reasons why he did it, and said it didn't come without some careful consideration. In the end, he simply said he has enough confidence in his ability that it would eventually pay off in the right situation.
