Outlaw out at least a week Trail Blazers forward Travis Outlaw on Thursday said his sprained right ankle will keep him out of Saturday's game at Sacramento, and probably for at least the next week. With 40 seconds left in the third quarter of Wednesday's game at the Rose Garden, Outlaw landed on the foot a New York player while playing defense, causing his ankle to roll over. Outlaw said it is the first time in his life he has suffered a sprained ankle. X-Rays taken on Wednesday were negative, but a baseball-sized knot is present on the outside of his ankle bone. On Thursday, Outlaw was still on crutches and unable to put pressure on his foot. I'm no doctor, but by the looks of the swelling, and how gingerly Outlaw is treating the ankle, I would guess Outlaw will miss the next five games: Saturday at Sacramento, Sunday at home against Miami, Tuesday at San Antonio, Wednesday at Dallas and next Friday at home against Sacramento. The team did not practice Thursday, but the players gathered at the practice facility in Tualatin for an NBA mandated Team Awareness Meeting. Every NBA team is required to have two such meetings a season, and Thursday's was the second session for the Blazers. I met Outlaw after the meeting for an hour-long interview for a lengthy feature piece I'm working on. We are targeting the piece to run sometime late next week, and in the story, I think you will discover many interesting things about the fourth-year Blazer, ranging from his hobby of bass fishing, to how he spends his money, to how he has earned the respect of coach Nate McMillan. It's funny, but in the four years Travis has been here, few - if any - in the media have really gotten to know him because he is so shy. But behind all his shyness and freakish athletic ability, there is a great person who is caring, funny and down to earth. After talking to his family, the coaches and Travis, I'm regretting not getting to know Outlaw earlier. He is truly a gem, and I hope the piece next week reveals that.
