UPDATE: Roy will be out another 2-3 weeks Posted by The Oregonian Sports Desk November 17, 2006 11:57 Trail Blazers doctors have "strongly advised" that rookie guard Brandon Roy wear an orthopedic boot for at least another two weeks, possibly three, as he tries to recover from pain in his left heel, said Art Sasse, the team's vice president of communications. Roy, wearing the boot to attempt to alleviate pain and swelling in the heel, has not progressed enough to remove the boot, which he must wear all day, other than when he sleeps. If Roy has to keep the boot on for the full additional three weeks, he will have missed at least 16 games, with more possible if he needs to work his way back into playing shape. That could push his return date back to Friday, Dec. 15 (a home game against the Clippers) because the Blazers will be in the midst of a six-game road trip earlier that week. Roy was born with an oversized Talus bone. Although it's not clear why, the bone had been pinching muscle in the heel, which caused pain and swelling. If the heel does not respond to immobilization from wearing the boot, he could face surgery to shorten the bone. Roy has been experiencing pain in the heel for more than a month, but he played through it until it got to be too much during the first half of Portland's game against the Clippers in Los Angeles on Nov. 6. After taking a cortizone shot and sitting out the Nov. 8 game against the Lakers, Roy tried to play against the Hornets on Nov. 10, but could only go six minutes before he had to remove himself. Roy has received a lot of preseason publicity as a potential rookie of the year, including being named the favorite for the award in a poll of general managers. In the three full games he has played, he averaged 18.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
