Good and bad from Tuesday night
Observations of the positives and negatives from the Blazers' 124-120 loss to
Golden State Tuesday night:
The Good
A rally? Do Blazers fans even remember that term? Last season we used to see
the Blazers come out cold, get stomped in the first quarter, then play the
final three quarters as if they were a formality. But on Tuesday Portland
rallied from 19 down -- a feat that took some time to comprehend -- then did
it again in the fourth quarter to force overtime after trailing by 13. Last
year's team wasn't that mentally strong. It gave in easily when teams threw a
19-point punch at them. This team withstood that blow and showed the
offensive firepower to come back. A very good sign.
Roy takes over: Brandon Roy showed flashes Tuesday night of the big-time NBA
scorer he's expected to become. Whether it was using his body to create a
little extra space while driving for a layup or hitting all five of his
free-throws, Roy filled up the stat sheet (which included nine rebounds and
three assists in 37 minutes).
Well-rounded game for Martell: Before Tuesday night I thought Martell Webster
has having a difficult preseason. He didn't exactly look sharp in last week's
preseason game against Seattle. But Tuesday was a whole different picture.
Webster scored in a variety of ways, hitting 3 of 6 3-pointers, 6 of 11 shots
overall, 10 of 12 free throws and even dishing out an assists. That's the
damage his supporters eventually see him doing on a nightly basis. Now if he
can just carry some of it over to the next game.
The Bad
Turnovers: Need I say more? Portland's 24 turnovers were ghastly. Most of
them were simply sloppy -- such as Sergio Rodriguez's attempted pass to Zach
Randolph with 27.1 seconds remaining that was stolen. Teams are going to
commit turnovers in the preseason. Young teams are going to commit turnovers
in the preseason. So a young team should certainly be expected to commit a
lot of them at this time of the year. But you can only hope the Blazers clean
up that act when the season starts.
There were how many fouls? That would be a combined 73. It disqualified
Brandon Roy, Jarrett Jack and Martell Webster for the Blazers, along with
Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins for Golden State, and three other players had
five fouls. That led to a combined 84 free throws, and Portland made nearly
as many free throws (37) as it did field goals (40). I pray I never have to
watch another game like that again.
3-point freeze-up: Only Martell Webster made a 3-pointer for Portland. The
rest of the team was 0 for 14, and made it easy for Golden State to
double-team Zach Randolph nearly every time he touched the ball. That just
makes Randolph's 27 points that much more impressive, but it will be hard for
him to continue those performances if the Blazers can't take some of the
defensive pressure off him with better perimeter shooting.
