The Blazers were brutal on their final two possessions of regulation,
failing to get a shot off before the shot clock expired with 33.1
seconds left, then settling for a panicked 19-foot jumper by Zach
Randolph with 0.4 seconds left that was an airball.
The Blazers led 83-81 and had the ball with 58 seconds left, but they
appeared to have no idea where or who they wanted to take the shot.
Houston, which has the best field goal percentage defense in the NBA,
did its part by trapping pick-and-rolls, which resulted in Ruben
Patterson with the ball well beyond the three-point arc as the shot
clock expired.
After Yao Ming -- who had a monster game of 28 points and 13 rebounds --
made a layup with 20.5 seconds to tie the game, the Blazers called a
timeout. They wanted to run a pick-and-roll with Damon Stoudamire and
Randolph, but the play was thwarted on the perimeter by a Houston trap,
and Randolph was left with the ball at the top of the key with five
seconds left and the hands of Steve Francis and Jim Jackson in his face.
With Shareef Abdur-Rahim open on the baseline, Randolph hesitated, then
finally hurried his long jumper, which wasn't close, sending the game
into overtime.
The Blazers weren't much better with their offensive execution in the
five-minute extra period, scoring one basket -- a breakaway dunk by Derek
Anderson with 3:13 left.
