http://www.nba.com/preview2003/por.html MAN ON THE SPOT Zach Attack Big Zach Randolph (6-9, 270) averaged less than 17 minutes per game in 2002-03 as the Blazers experimented with a variety of rotations, but it was impossible to ignore his performances when he got significant playing time. Randolph posted 15.5 ppg and 8.0 rpg in the 11 games he started, compared to just 7.3 ppg and 3.9 rpg as a reserve. In the first round of the playoffs, when Portland fell to Dallas in seven games, Randolph was a bully in the paint, leading the team with 8.7 rpg and scoring 13.9 ppg on .525 shooting. Now, with Rasheed Wallace content to play more of a perimeter game and 34-year-old Dale Davis looking at reduced minutes, the Blazers are counting on Randolph -- in just his third season -- to be the go-to post player they once hoped Wallace would become. "I have to get (Randolph) on the floor because he is so productive," coach Maurice Cheeks told The Oregonian. "He is going to be an important player for us." SEASON OUTLOOK Once again the Blazers' collection of personalities makes them one of the NBA's more enigmatic squads. Gone are veteran influences Scottie Pippen and Arvydas Sabonis, leaving open the question of who will emerge as a team leader. On the court, 6-5 swingman Bonzi Wells (15.2 ppg) is at times an unguardable talent, but also inconsistent offensively. Like Randolph, he stepped up in the postseason, averaging 19.0 ppg to lead the team. Wallace, 6-11 with range, has seemingly not capitalized on his potential. He has shown he can take what he wants around the basket, and was the high scorer in Portland (18.1 ppg) last season, but often he launches long-range shots from the wing; in 2002-03, he ranked second only to guard Derek Anderson in three-point attempts. How aggressive Wallace is at both ends of the floor, and how well Wells complements him, will in large part determine the Blazers' playoff fortunes in 2003-04.
