▆▆ ▆ 李瑞中(Ph.D., 2007, New York University)，現任中央研究院歐美研
▆ ▆▆ 所助研究員，台灣大學社會學系兼任教師，美國蘭德智庫(RAND Corporation)
▆ ▆▆ 兼任研究員，蘭德人口研究中心副主任（暨資料與計算小組組長與三人
▆▆ ▆ 執行委員會成員）。專長為家庭社會學、人口學、社會心理學、當代美
▆ ▆▆ 國社會、量化研究法以及公共政策。曾獲得台灣大學心理學系畢業論文
▆ ▆▆ 獎第一名、美國威斯康辛大學社會學系博士資格考優等、紐約大學博士
班全額獎學金與博士論文獎學金與美國社會學會社會人口學學生論文獎，
▆▆ ▆ 並為傑出人才基金會「積極爭取國外優秀年輕學者獎助」設立以來首位
▆ ▆▆ 人文社會科學的獲獎人。著作見於國際期刊如：Demography、Demographic

In this presentation, I attempt to refute the charge that quantitative
sociology (and social demography in particular) is atheoretical, with a
(self-)critique of common practices in quantitative family studies. Following
the tradition from C. Wright Mills (1959) to Arthur Stinchcombe (2005) that
emphasizes craftsmanship in social science reseache, I argue that analyst's
statistical model is his/her commitment to an articulated theory.
Using three examples from my work on divorce in the United States,I demonstrate
that methodological sophistication will lead to theoretical improvement and
theoretical sophistication will also lead to methodological improvement. The
first example examines trends in the intergenerational transmission of divorce.
The second example estimates the causal effects of parental divorce on
children's behavior problems. The third example explores beliefs about marriage
prospects and family migration decisions.
