The house, at Sunnybank Hills, mainly housed international students and had backyard portaloos and makeshift garage bedrooms to accommodate tenants. The raid follows a Brisbane City Council (BCC) sitting last week, where changes to the House Code were adopted to cut the number of unrelated people permitted in one dwelling from six to five. The Sunnybank Hills raid was part of a council housing blitz, which has seen more than 1,000 house inspections to tackle overcrowding since July last year. Deputy Mayor Graham Quirk said portaloos in the backyard of the property raised serious sanitation issues, and changing a garage into a bedroom was an illegal development of a property. Mr Quirk said the council would not tolerate illegal accommodation that led to substandard conditions for Brisbane residents. ``In many cases these are overseas students being charged top dollar to live in substandard accommodation with not enough toilets, or bedrooms,'' he said. ``Students bring over a billion dollars to our annual economy and they spend a lot of money to get here, yet some find themselves victims of poor housing and sanitation.''
