He can’t throw with an unstable shoulder. If it keeps popping out of place, he said, he will need surgery to anchor it, as he has had done on his left shoulder. UPDATE: That’s exactly what has happened: Inge said he will have surgery in a week, ending his season. Recovery time is six months. He hopes to maybe pinch hit in the interim, and he asked about the possibility of delaying surgery and DH-ing and pinch-hitting, but he said he realizes his value is primarily as a defensive player. Manager Bob Melvin also noted after the game that the A’s are happy with DHs Jonny Gomes and Seth Smith, so it sounds as if there just weren’t enough potential at-bats to keep Inge from having surgery earlier, which will help him in terms of finding another job for next year.
