Now they're on a pace that could set the record again. As ecpected, Oakland placed infielders Nomar Garciaparra and Mark Ellis on the 15-day DL early Wednesday afternoon. That brought the number of times the team has used the DL this year to five, and it's less than a sixth of the way into the season. Garciaparra (strained right calf) and Ellis (strained left calf) were two of the four A's who had to leave Tuesday's game, the opener of a three-game series at Rangers Ballpark. Left-hander Brett Anderson departed after five strong innings with a blister on his left index finger and righty Santiago Casilla later was lifted with a right calf issue of his own. What on earth is going on with this team? "I don't know," Oakland manager Bob Geren said. "If I did, I'd make it stop." Oakland recalled infielder Eric Patterson and righty reliever Kevin Cameron from Triple-A Sacramento to replace Garciaparra and Ellis on the active roster. Both were informed of their promotions after the River Cats' victory over visiting Las Vegas on Tuesday night and caught an 8:30 a.m. flight out of Sacramento to Dallas. Acquired in the trade that sent Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs last summer, Patterson had two stints with the big league club in Chicago in 2007, three stints last year before the trade and two stints with the A's after the trade. "The good thing about going up and down a lot is that every time you come up you feel more comfortable," said Patterson. A 25-year-old who bats from the left side and can play all over the infield and outfield, Patterson was batting .329 with seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, six RBIs and 16 runs scored in 19 games with Sacramento. He'd also walked 13 times for a .440 on-base percentage and was tied for third in the Pacific Coast League with nine stolen bases -- including a straight steal of home to score the winning run Tuesday. "You just try to get the same feeling up here that you had down there," he said. Geren likes to get his promoted players into a game as quickly as possible, so he wrote Patterson into the starting lineup at second base for Wednesday's game. Cameron, 29, is ecpected to see some work right away, too. "I haven't pitched for three days, so I'm ready to go," said Cameron, who was 2-1 with a save and a 3.27 ERA in eight appearances for the River Cats. Signed to a Minor League deal as a free agent last November, Cameron posted a 4.26 ERA in seven appearances as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training. He appeared in the Majors with the Padres in each of the previous two seasons and is 2-0 with a 2.91 ERA in 58 career big league appearances, all in relief. There isn't much mystery associated with Cameron's game. He's obviously not as nasty a Yankees righty Mariano Rivera, but like the future Hall of Fame closer, Cameron throws a cutter up to 90 percent of the time. "My formula's pretty simple," he explained. "I'm throwing my cut fastball, and I'm coming right at you." In keeping with the club's unofficial policy regarding injured players, Geren said there is no timetable for the return of Garciaparra and Ellis. Said Ellis, "I've never had a calf injury before, but I know they can linger a long time, so you really have to be careful." Garciaparra, 35, knows that all too well, having been diagnosed with compartmental exertional syndrome in both calves. After fumbling through an attempt to explain exactly what that means, Garciaparra finally went the layman's route. It means he'll pretty much have sore and/or tight calves as long as he's active. "This is what I have to deal with," he said. "This is what I have to battle, all the time." Anderson, who said he had a blister pop up in virtually the same spot during a Minor League start last year in Arkansas, was wearing a bandage on the finger Wednesday and said he's "optimistic" about making his next start. Casilla said his calf started bugging him in New York last week but doesn't think he'll be out long. "One, two days," he said. "I hope." --
