RHP Donald Simmons, A's http://swingtraining.net/Carlos/Draft2007/simmons-side.gif With a long, loopy arm action and slow, deliberate "tall and fall" mechanics, Simmons is yet another guy that doesn't make me jump out of my chair. To his credit, he does a good job (for the most part) of "firming up his front side"and consistently repeating his mechanics, which are probably the main reasons that he has plus command. Nothing too exciting, but this is a safe pick here. He could move quickly because he looks to have mastered his mechanics. Compared to Poreda, Simmons is an all-star (mechanically speaking). I like risky and higher upside picks and all, but Simmons is the better pick between these two. #74.OF Grant Desme, A's (second round, 74th overall) http://swingtraining.net/Carlos/Draft2007/desme-side.gif Solid but unspectacular, Desme's swing is short and simple... The clip above is a batting practice swing, which is better than the game swings I will talk about from now on. On his game swings, Desme's power is hindered by what his front leg and knee do at around footplant. As Desme extends his foot forward, his knee and hips start opening up a little early. Desme reaches with his left foot instead of carrying his weight forward with his hips. If he could learn to load his hips and hands powerfully into footplant, Desme could increase his power. All that said, Desme has a solid swing. For the most part, he keeps the bat in the zone well without reaching and pushing his hands away from his body. With the way his lower body works, he might develop pull-side power, but I see him vulnerable to pitches away. Solid pick here, but Rike, taken a few spots ahead of him, is the better prospect. #120.RHP Sam Demel, A's (third round, 120th overall) http://swingtraining.net/Carlos/Draft2007/demel-front.gif Another guy who wastes no time lettin' it fly, this is Sam Demel's delivery from the stretch.... Are you having trouble picking up his release point? Me too. Demel has a quick, deceptive motion. His arm action is short, elbowy and loose. The ball is hidden throughout his motion and then, out of nowhere, the ball is right on top of the hitter. Demel doesn't have the greatest velocity, but his fastball had some serious arm-side run to it on the video. Demel seems to open his shoulders a little early but he does a great job of firming up his front side to prevent him from flying open too much in his delivery. I love this pick in the third round. He should move quickly. --
