KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA (TICKER) —Houston Astros lefthander Mike Hampton returned to team headquarters Monday afternoon after an EKG test revealed an irregular heartbeat. This is another in a long line of setbacks for the oft-injured Hampton, who missed the entire 2006 and 2007 seasons following Tommy John surgery in September 2005. The Astros, however, did not think the latest problem is serious. Hampton, 36, was examined by Astros team physican Dr. Jim Muntz on Monday. When he returns to Houston, he will undergo a procedure to correct the heartbeat with the application of an electrical current. The Astros expect that Hampton will be back at camp by Thursday. “Mike had an irregularity in his heartbeat rhythm,”said Dr. Michael Link, who discovered Hampton's condition during a routine physical Saturday.“He has been sent to Houston to condense his evaluation and treatment so he can return in as short a time as possible.” According to Link, Hampton is in good condition and is expected to be at full speed when he returns to Kissimmee. “He had no symptoms and was completely unaware of this,”Link said.“How long he's had it is unknown, but it is less than a year. It did not show up at his physical last year during spring training.” Hampton spent four seasons with the Astros early in his career (1994-99) and returned to Houston when he was signed as a free agent in the offseason. He has a career mark of 141-105 with a 4.01 ERA in 14 seasons. --
