Tammy opts for ITF events Published on October 13, 2005 [TENNIS] Thai No 1 Tamarine Tanasugarn has opted to stay away from WTA level tournaments and play in ITF events in an attempt to return to the top 100 by the end of the year. After slumping to No 156 in the world this week, her lowest position in 10 years, a down-hearted Tamarine has set her sights on smaller tournaments in an effort to climb back up the WTA rankings so she can be accepted directly into the main draw of the 2006 Australian Open. “Right now it’s my priority to return to the top 100. I don’t want to play the qualifying rounds in Melbourne [at the Australian Open] because the qualifying competition is not easy at present,’’ said Tamarine. She admitted her mental condition hasn’t been the same with her ranking slipping. “It has affected my confidence to a certain level. But I have to live with it. It is like a cycle, after you climb up, you fall down. But I still believe I have the ability to get back to my best form,’’ she said. Tammy has been plagued by injuries especially to her left foot, which resulted in her below-par performances throughout the season. Her latest loss was to Conchita Martinez in the current Thailand Open on Tuesday. “I served well and played okay, but Conchie was too good. She had well-placed shots and didn’t miss easily. The surface here suits her game and the speed of my balls could not do anything to her,’’ Tamarine said of her first round match. She will play her first ITF event, which offers $50,000 in prize money, South Korea in a fortnight. If she can produce good results, Tamarine will enter three or four more ITF tournaments in Asia.
