26/6/2007 - Peru beat Uruguay 3-0 in Group A

Merida - Venezuela, June 26th (AFP) – The Peruvian national squad thrashed
Uruguay in an action-packed match in Group A, which kicked off the Copa
America 2007, this Tuesday. Bolivia and hosts Venezuela are also in this
group. With the result, Peru take the lead in the Group.
Miguel Villalta, from Lima’s Sporting Cristal, opened the scoring on 27
minutes with a powerful header after meeting a cross by skipper Claudio
Pizarro.
On 69 minutes, Juan Carlos Marino, who had just come on, received a pass by
Farfan and fired a right-footer to beat Fabian Carini and double the lead
with a true blockbuster.
Paolo Guerrero closed the scoring on 88 minutes, claiming the first trouncing
of the Cup, which began this Tuesday, at the Metropolitan de Merida Stadium.
Peru put on a great show, whilst the Uruguayans will certainly prefer to
forget their performance, especially in the first half, after boasting slow
moves, with no objectivity, proving they felt the absence of Alvaro Recoba,
the squad’s playmaker.
Peru clinched their first win thanks to the fine job done by Jefferson Farfa,
the 26-year-old PSV Eindhoven player, who was the maestro of a team
well-organized by Julio Cesar Uribe.
In the second round of Group A, scheduled for Saturday, Uruguay will meet
Bolivia, whilst Peru will clash with Venezuela.
