One major league source told FOXSports.com that Napoli was claimed on trade
waivers. The Angels have until Monday afternoon to work out a deal with the
claiming club.
The identity of the team could not be immediately determined, but it’s
probably another American League club.
Virtually every AL contender could use help at catcher, first base and/or
designated hitter: Boston, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Chicago and Texas.
It’s also possible that the Tigers put in a claim, thinking that Napoli
could figure into their 2011 catching plans.
Napoli leads the Angels in starts behind the plate this year, but he hasn’t
caught regularly since Jeff Mathis returned from the disabled list in June.
In fact, Napoli has seen much more playing time at first base than catcher
since mid-June.
Napoli entered Saturday hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 60 RBIs in 112
games. He started at first base against Baltimore on Saturday night.
Napoli is earning $3.6 million this year and is on track to become a free
agent after the 2012 season.
