Rivera agrees to return to Angels
Free-agent outfielder set to sign on in Anaheim for three years
The Angels announced Friday that they have agreed with free-agent outfielder
Juan Rivera on a three-year deal worth $12.75 million.
Rivera, 30, played in 89 games for the Angels in 2008 and hit .246 with 12
home runs and 45 RBIs. He had a big second half after playing sparingly in
the first half, still recovering from a broken leg suffered in 2006 while
playing winter ball.
Rivera's most productive year in the Major Leagues came with the Angels in
2006, when he had 448 at-bats and hit .310 with 23 home runs and 85 RBIs.
The Angels have three other free agents on the market. Signing Mark Teixeira
remains "our priority," general manager Tony Reagins said. Left fielder
Garret Anderson and starter Jon Garland are unsigned.
Rivera, who began his career in 2001 with the Yankees, is a .284 career
hitter, with a .468 slugging percentage and .331 on-base percentage. Late in
the 2008 season, he said his main goal was finding a place where he could
play regularly. The Angels, with a need for power, evidently convinced him
Anaheim was still the place for him.
