Angels, RHP Shields agree to terms on new four-year contract

PHOENIX (TICKER) -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim locked up one of their
top relievers on Thursday, agreeing to terms with righthander Scot Shields on
a four-year contract.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Shields, 31, has served as the primary setup man for All-Star closer
Francisco Rodriguez over the last three seasons, going 25-20 with a 3.00 ERA
over that span. He has logged a total of 284 2/3 innings in that span, the
highest total in the majors among relievers.

"Scot has been crucial to the success of our bullpen," Angels general manager
Bill Stoneman said. "He is one of the most reliable and resilient relievers
in the game, and we are thrilled to keep him in an Angels uniform for a
while."
Shields continued his outstanding work last season, going 7-7 with a 2.87
ERA, two saves and 31 holds in 74 games. In parts of six career seasons with
Anaheim, the righthander is 35-29 with a 2.81 ERA and 14 saves.
