http://tinyurl.com/4tgbg ANAHEIM -- The Angels suffered a huge scare Monday night when slugger Vladimir Guerrero was hit in the head by a Ryan Franklin fastball in the bottom of the first inning, but X-rays proved normal and Guerrero was smiling in the clubho use after the game, claiming he'd be in Tuesday's lineup. "That's what I love about Vladdy," Angels closer Troy Percival said. "He's alw ays smiling. He got hit in the head and he's back here smiling." It didn't look like fun and games in the first inning, though. On an 0-and-2 count, Franklin buzzed an 89 mph heater that clipped Guerrero on the side of the helmet near his temple. Guerrero lay motionless for a few minutes by the plate while head trainer Ned Bergert administered smelling salts. Guerrero appeared to be conscious the who le time, got up on his own, and was helped off the field and replaced by pinch -runner Curtis Pride. After Guerrero was hit, Angels manager Mike Scioscia launched into a tirade ag ainst the umpiring crew, including crew chief John Hirschbeck, apparently beca use both benches were warned and Scioscia was concerned that his starter, John Lackey, would not be able to pitch inside effectively without being ejected. Also, Scioscia explained that the umpires had received a report about "bad blo od" between the two clubs stemming from a July 23 incident in Seattle. On that night, Mariners lefty Bobby Madritsch hit Guerrero with a pitch right after Seattle second baseman Bret Boone had visited Madritsch on the mound to offer him advice about runner Chone Figgins, who was on second base at the tim e. Guerrero mistakenly assumed that Boone had suggested that Madritsch hit him, s o Guerrero pointed at Boone on his way to first base, emptying the benches, al though no punches were thrown. "I know Franklin has good command," Scioscia said Monday. "I can't speak for R yan or anybody over there, and I'm all for pitching inside, but that ball was thrown behind his head. "That (the July 23 incident) was all cleared up and all done, but evidently th ere was a report on it. What I was upset about was if you had this much knowle dge about (what had happened July 23), Franklin should be ejected." Scioscia argued for a few minutes before Franklin looked over at the Angels' b ench and sent a few strong words in Scioscia's direction. Scioscia responded a nd both benches began to empty out of the dugouts, although there was no incid ent on the field. Franklin and Seattle manager Bob Melvin denied any intent. "He started pointing at me," Franklin said. "He started it. He was pointing and I said, 'Are you pointing at me?' We had s ome words. I was upset about hitting Guerrero. I know everyone on our team, mo st of the guys on their team, surely knew I was not throwing at him at all. I tried to throw a fastball up in the zone, not even inside, something over the middle of the plate, high, and it ran in on me." Guerrero, meanwhile, spoke with reporters after the game and said he was a bit sore and had some swelling but otherwise felt fine.
