LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 06/04/2006 On the day he went on the disabled list for the first time in a career full of more favorable firsts, Albert Pujols reported difficulty sleeping, occasional pain when breathing and increased soreness in his right side, Cardinals officials said Sunday. Pujols has a tear in his right oblique muscle, and team trainer Barry Weinberg said the injury is considered severe. "Right now, it hurts when he breathes. It hurts when he moves," Weinberg said. "He has a significant strain. He was more sore (Sunday) than Saturday. He still has some limited mobility and pain against resistance. Now, we just go through the stages of repairing it." The National League leader in home runs with 25 and RBIs with 65, Pujols strained the muscle that runs along the contour of the torso when tracking a pop fly early in Saturday's game. He was removed from the game before the next inning, and Sunday, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Pujols was not available to comment either day. Weinberg said it's too early to talk timetable for a return. Rest is the immediate treatment. "We'll do everything to get him back as soon after 15 days as we can," Weinberg said. "There's always a possibility of a longer term. You just want to see how it goes over the next week. You eliminate the pain. The first thing he has to do is, normal things have to be normal - you know, coughing, sneezing, opening a door. Then we can get more aggressive with the rehab, and we can get more aggressive with some baseball activity." The Cubs have a case study. Newly acquired Cubs first baseman Phil Nevin missed 22 games last season with a strained left oblique muscle. Nevin stressed how, for righthanded hitters like Pujols and himself, the left oblique can be difficult to repair and rehabilitate. Nevin said there was little he could do without pain for days. "I had a pretty decent strain on the left side, and I was warned not to come back too soon," Nevin said. "I tried hitting probably before I should have. That set me back. ... Everything you do, the foundation is your core. Riding the bike or even getting out of bed, you're using your (abdominal muscles), your core muscle. To help it heal, you really can't do anything. ... To this day, you'll see me stretching and doing things out there just to make sure everything is right." Cubs manager Dusty Baker agreed that an easy parallel can be drawn between his club losing first baseman Derrek Lee, who finished third in the NL MVP voting last season, and Pujols, who won the award. Lee fractured his wrist just before the Cubs' visit to Busch Stadium in April. It was only this week that Nevin was added, after weeks of scouring for a trade. The market is unfriendly to those in need, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "At one point, we thought we might get somebody that might help, but you're not going to get anybody's 3-, 4-, 5-type of hitter in any deal," he said. "Just because they were in the race and we weren't? It just doesn't work that way." Pujols, in the dugout for Sunday's game, is not expected to go on the trip with the team because his actions are limited. Outfielder Chris Duncan was recalled from Class AAA Memphis to take Pujols' place on the roster. --
