In our group we explore new methods that allow direct, highly-specific protein functionalization of DNA nanostructures using covalent and non-covalent approaches. Our aim is to quantitatively understand the role of multivalency in these systems and to translate this knowledge into generally applicable design principles for multivalent protein-based diagnostics agents and enzyme-activatable targeting ligands.. Requirements We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist with a background in (bio)chemistry or related fields (chemistry, molecular biology, biophysical chemistry) who enjoys working on a challenging research project at the interface of chemistry, biology, and biophysics. The ideal candidate would have experience in bioconjugation chemistry, DNA nanotechnology, protein chemistry, standard molecular biology techniques, and/or bioorganic chemistry. You should be fluent in English and you should enjoy working in a multinational and multidisciplinary group of scientists Embedding The department of Biomedical Engineering is a joint-department of the Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Maastricht. Biomedical Engineering plays a key role as a new discipline, interfacing and integrating engineering and biomedical sciences. The protein engineering group headed by Dr Maarten Merkx develops protein-based tools for intracellular imaging and molecular diagnostics. The Merkx group is part of the Laboratory of Chemical Biology, which also includes the research groups of Prof. E.W. Meijer, Prof. L. Brunsveld and Dr P. Dankers. The lab has modern facilities for molecular biology, protein expression and purification, organic synthesis, fluorescence microscopy and cell biology. Employment conditions A challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious university. Gross monthly salaries are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). For PhD students salaries start at € 2042 per month initially, and increase to € 2612 in the fourth year. For Post-docs the salary is € 2861 per month initially, to € 2977 in the second year.
