Aaron Kwok wants his S'pore concert to be a tribute to his idol, Michael Jackson [ELECTRIC SHOW] By Tan Kee Yun April 22, 2010 HE COUNTS the late Michael Jackson as 'the only idol' he ever had. Click to see larger image The flamboyant Hong Kong singer-actor even described in an e-mail interview with The New Paper how when growing up, he would hone his 'dance techniques watching MJ's videos'. And for his May 7 gig at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the 44-year-old singer-actor hopes to pay tribute to the Gloved One. Kwok said he is in the 'midst of discussion'. 'MJ has influenced me so much, he will always be remembered,' he added. Kwok's admiration for Jackson seems to be a mutual one. Back in the late '90s, there were Hong Kong media reports that Jackson - who died of a drug overdose last year - owned only one title by a Chinese artiste in his entire music collection. That was supposed to be the 1994 live DVD of Kwok's Crazy City Concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Leaner, fitter Then, Kwok had told the Hong Kong press it was 'an honour'. Kwok added in this interview: 'He was my dance mentor who helped lay the foundation of my future skills and gave me an eye for choreography.' Since he emerged onto the entertainment scene in the late 80s, Kwok has openly idolised Jackson. In his 1996 concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, he impressed a 6,000-strong local crowd by deftly pulling off a flawless Jacko imitation. On stage, he twisted and wriggled in a military-like outfit ala Jackson, complete with white gloves, beret and sunglasses. He also successfully executed Jackson's trademark move, the 'Leaning Tower of Pisa' (you know the one, where he leans forward, back straight, to form a 45-degree angle to the ground). In 1999, Kwok even snagged the opportunity to star opposite Jackson's younger sister, Janet - a chart-topping superstar herself - in a Pepsi commercial. With just three weeks to concert night, Kwok is gearing up for the demanding stagework. 'I definitely have to improve my stamina as it'll be a three-hour energetic show, with lots of fast dances and songs,' he said. 'The most important thing would be to cut down on heavy breathing.' To achieve that, he has been 'jogging and swimming actively', in addition to doing crunches and weight exercises. Visually stunning He is confident that fans would be impressed by his 'leaner and fitter build'. 'I personally feel I'm much fitter than I was last year (he did a concert in Singapore last May). 'This new look of Aaron Kwok is one of the concert's highlights!' Mr Wilson Sho, managing director of concert organiser ECG Events & Lifestyle, told The New Paper that Kwok and his 80-man concert production team promise a grander and even more visually stunning spectacle compared to his previous show a year ago. This show will again feature the world's largest indoor revolving stage, which Kwok proudly broke the Guinness World Record for last February. More than that, the 10m by 9.44m translucent revolving platform (about the size of two squash courts) now features 'the unique ability to split right in the centre', said Mr Sho. 'Last year, audiences got to witness how the magnificent stage rotates both vertically and horizontally, elevating Aaron and his dancers up to as high as 10m in the air. 'This time round, when the stage is completely upright, it can 'open up' to form a V-shape structure.' Aaron explained that balancing on the revolving stage took some getting used to. 'A few of our dancers tripped during rehearsals, as they weren't familiar with the stage's slope inclination,' he said. 'We also made sure our shoes were not the slippery sort, as those would cause us to fall down easily.' Mr Sho said the 'massive' concert set-up costs more than half a million to produce. It was comparable to last year's gig, brought in by Scorpio East Productions, which reportedly cost more than $1 million. Tickets have been going fast since they went on sale in February, said Mr Sho. So far, 80 per cent of tickets have been sold. Last year, Kwok played to a full-house crowd of 10,000 at the same venue (the Singapore Indoor Stadium). He added: 'Aaron's stage equipment from Guangzhou will arrive in six to 10 large containers. It will take five days to assemble everything. 'The stage will be reconstructed on the spot.' Kwok, as usual, will have multiple costume changes - from the dazzling and glamorous to campy and kitsch, added Mr Sho. A large part of the costumes are designed by renowned Hong Kong art director Zhang Shu Ping, who has worked consistently on Aaron's concerts over the years. This time round, Kwok promised more Mandarin songs for fans longing for a nostalgic stroll down memory lane. 'Compared to last year, I'll be singing more of my Mandarin classic hits. 'There will be some new arrangements to the tunes, to spice things up a little.'
