Bernard Tomic and Matthew Ebden up for player-voted ATP award by: Leo Schlink From: Herald Sun November 02, 2011 9:07AM BERNARD Tomic and Matthew Ebden have been nominated for the newcomer of the year award in the ATP World Tour Awards. Tomic, 18, and Ebden, 23, made massive strides this season and are the only Australian men ranked inside the top 100. The pair will vie with Canada's Milos Raonic and American prodigy Ryan Harrison for the award, which is voted on by all ATP players. The decision will be announced during the November 20-27 World Tour Finals at The O2 arena in London. Past winners include Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Mark Philippoussis, Pat Rafter, John McEnroe and Michael Chang. Tomic has risen to 37th in the world after a season crowned by his effort to qualify at Wimbledon and then reaching the quarter-finals - the youngest player to achieve the feat since Boris Becker in 1986. The Queenslander defeated well-credentialled opponents on the way to the last eight, including Robin Soderling, Igor Andreev, Nikolay Davydenko and Xavier Malisse. Ebden is now the highest-ranked West Australian in World Tour history, climbing to 80th from 196. Renowned for his unstinting work ethic, Ebden enjoyed an excellent Asian swing, qualifying in Tokyo and Shanghai, where he toppled world No.12 Frenchman Gilles Simon to reach the quarters. Raonic, 20, started the year ranked 156th and soared to 25th after qualifying for the Australian Open and advancing to the fourth round.
