At first it was reported that the Ajax goalkeeper had only arrived on a six-month loan deal, but today the official Viola website confirmed that the switch was permanent. Although it is still not clear how much the deal cost, today’s newspaper ‘ La Repubblica’ claims that he arrived for just €1m – around half what the Dutch giants paid to take him from Dynamo Bucharest in 2002. The fact that Romanian international Lobont has been tied to a long-term contract raises questions over the future of Frey. The Frenchman has been ruled out for the rest of the season following knee ligament surgery, but had been on fine form up until now. He had impressed to such a degree, in fact, that he had attracted interest from several Premiership and Liga outfits, including Arsenal.
