The traditional philosophical-scientific depreciation of rhetoric
as a secondary tool which does nothing but disturb the direct
approach to Truth is itself dependent on rhetoric.
The supreme rhetorical gesture is that of renouncing itself -
of referring to itself in a negative way
("What I will say now is not mere rhetoric, I mean it seriously . . . ")
