Funded PhD studentship in anti-microbial resistance at the human-animal
interface
Is the family pet a risk factor for multidrug resistant bacterial infections?
This is a unique opportunity to develop your expertise in the next big issue
facing human and animal health in a high quality training environment with
multidisciplinary supervisors and advisors.
A three year NZ Health Research Council funded PhD position is available at
mEpiLab, Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences,
Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
The candidate would have strong links to the Massey’s other campuses in
Auckland and Wellington, the University of Otago, Labtest NZ and the
Institute of Environmental Science and Research Ltd.
This studentship would focus on the following components of the project:
1. A case-control study of community-acquired multidrug-resistant
E. coli infections in humans in the greater Auckland region. This will
include sampling in-contact companion animals and human household contacts
and phenotypic and low resolution genotypic characterisation of strains.
2. The molecular epidemiology, transmissibility, population structure
and phylodynamics of extended-spectrum beta lactamase and plasmid-mediated
ampC producers. This will include high resolution genotypic and phenotypic
characterisation of strains and analysis of population structure,
differentiation and gene flow.
3. The development of a stochastic, compartmental mathematical model
of the transmission dynamics of multidrug-resistant E. coli within households
informed by the faecal isolation and genetic typing data from the case-control
study.
We are looking for a scientist who is developing their independent thinking,
is interested and informed about antimicrobial resistance and wants to learn
new skills or tools.
The successful candidate will have an honours degree in a relevant discipline
or a medical or veterinary qualification and a Master’s degree in a relevant
field such as epidemiology, microbiology, applied statistics etc. The funding
provides a tax free stipend of NZ$25K p.a. The successful candidate is
eligible to apply for additional scholarships.
Informal enquiries and/or request for more detailed information can be made
to either:

Applications (in the form of a cover letter outlining the candidate's
motivation, together with a CV) should be emailed to

The closing date is 20th August 2014.
