BEALSCRAZY Question: In the scene with Bette and Tina in the back seat of the car with Angelica, they kiss, and just before they both kiss Angelica, Bette gives Tina a little "nose snuggle" just like in S1 at the art gallery when they decided to do the threeway. Was that scripted or did Jennifer and Laurel improvise that? Answer: I have to give all the credit to Jennifer and Laurel for this wonderful moment. After six seasons of working together, they have an undeniable chemistry that produces nuances and subtleties of character we could only hope to script so well. (Anyone remember the joint Cobb salad order in Season 4? That would be another instance of Jennifer-Laurel magic.) Question : what you were most trying to portray between Bette and Tina in this episode? MISSJONNA25 Question: I just wanted to know what you were most trying to portray between Bette and Tina in this episode. Was it love? Forgiveness? Their ability to co-parent? The beginning of a future? A combination? Answer: The Bette and Tina story in this episode is mainly about togetherness and family and a mutual commitment to those ideals. They share an understanding of each other’s character, including flaws. They’ve ceased judging each other. We’ll see later in the season more how Tina recognizes that Bette’s sexuality and moments of self-righteousness are inseparable from her self-identity. It doesn’t mean Tina won’t demand respect—as she does here in the conversation with Shane—but she doesn’t want to deny who Bette is. At the same time, Bette has truly come to see Tina as her partner and complete equal. While you might believe that Bette and Tina have always belonged together (our writers’ room debates this a lot!)—I think we could say this episode marks a new future for Bette and Tina. It’s a future built around a familiar love but also on revised attitudes and a deep understanding that what they have together, and as a family, is far more important than anything that may have divided them in the past. Question : What inspired you to show us Jenny's death within the first two minutes of the new season? ROVERMOM Question: My question to you, Ms. Ilene, is what inspired you to show us Jenny's death within the first two minutes of the new season...and go backwards 3 months and have us lead up to her death - instead of putting her death at the end? Answer: We knew from the beginning that this was the story we wanted to tell. We just simply thought it was an intriguing way to frame our final season. There are all kinds of metaphors inherent in the premise and I hope that once you’ve seen the whole season, and especially the finale, those metaphors will resonate for you and we’ll have said what we wanted to say about this incredible journey we’ve all been on together. Answer: When we were first developing the character of Papi, we talked a lot in the writers’ room about this idea of parallel universes of friends and other “L worlds.” If you remember from episode 401, this idea of intersecting solar systems of relationships and hookups is what gave birth to Alice’s “OurChart” website and first introduced us to Papi. With her vast number of hookups, Papi was a “portal” into a new constellation of women…and that’s how we met Tasha. As Tasha spent more time with our friends, namely Alice, her star became aligned with our West Hollywood, Planet oriented constellation. Papi has certainly been out there ever since, doing what she does best in her own East LA solar system. Once in a while, as in this episode—when the gravitational pull between Alice and Tasha went a little haywire—Papi’s stars collide with ours again. Incidentally, her solar system was already eclipsing ours by way of another “portal”—the notorious Gabby Deveaux. Question : How much attention is given to the lyrics? IAMHERE Question: I have a question about music choices. How much attention is given to the lyrics? Is special consideration given to ensure that they add insight into what the characters' mindsets are at that given time? Absolutely, we pay close attention to the music we use, the lyrics of each song, and what they might say about the scene or a character’s state of mind. That said, you can’t take everything too literally. Sometimes we just love a song and the vibe it creates. Answer: I work directly with our co-executive producer and composer, Elizabeth Ziff, our music supervisor, Howard Paar and the director of each episode to select music. The process starts when we’re still at script stage. We all gather in our board room for a “music meeting” in which we review the script scene by scene and decide what scenes need a song, what scenes need score (instrumental music composed for a particular scene), and what scenes play “dry.” --
