标题[问题] 高中课文文法

What most people are less aware of, however, are the effects that a vegetarian diet, compared to a non-vegetarian diet, can have on the environment.
请问这句的动词是are the effects的are吗？为什麽是be 动词复词型呢?我认为主词是what....，所以要用is。
这是课文，所以应该是不会有错。希望前辈们指导为什麽要用are。(还是其实你觉得动词不是这样?)
