ESSENTIAL DUTIES 1. Set up and carry out routine and complex experiments related to epigenetics in cancer. 2. Perform tissue culture experiments as well as animal bioassays. Collect cells and tissues from in vitro and in vivo experiments, isolate DNA and RNA, and perform real-time PCR mRNA expression and Western blot protein analyses as well as pyrosequencing analyses for changes in DNA methylation. 3. Perform quantitative immunohistochemistry using computer-assisted image analysis. 4. Monitor inventory and initiate purchase orders for laboratory supplies as appropriate. 5. Prepare stock solutions including tissue culture media. Maintain tissue cultures using routine procedures. 6. Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed. Attend related meetings as appropriate. 7. Provide instruction in the proper use of standard techniques and procedures to laboratory personnel. Ensure safe laboratory procedures and maintain appropriate safety records. Oversee daily laboratory operation in the absence of the supervisor or Principal Investigator. 8. Assist in the development and implementation of research protocols. Perform library searches. Assist with the preparation of progress reports, research abstracts, posters, and manuscripts. 9. Maintain accurate laboratory records and consolidate research data for evaluation by the P.I. Communicate summaries of experimental results. 10. Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in laboratory research. MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education: Research Technologist: Bachelor's or Master's degree in biology or other health sciences field preferred Post Doctoral Researcher: Ph.D. degree in biology or other health sciences field preferred KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES Working knowledge of tissue culture techniques including proliferation and apoptosis assays, animal tumor bioassays including the handling of carcinogens, histopathology and immunohistochemistry, computer-assisted image analysis, real time-PCR, Western blot and pyrosequencing analyses. Ability to follow research protocols and to modify protocols as required. Ability to follow and enforce safety procedures. Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required. --
