Greetings Ms. Cheng- Thank you for your call today. We enjoyed speaking with you. All of us think you have the proper intellectual curiosity for a Masters student, sound academic background, and you would bring good skills to the lab. At the same time, the students and I are genuinely concerned that your current level of comprehension of spoken technical English may put you at academic risk (it would be difficult for you in classes), especially in classes without a formal text book. The students were also concerned about your ability to be an effective teaching assistant with your current English skills. To be clear, a teaching assistant teaches laboratory sections of courses such as general biology, anatomy, physiology, and biology for non-biology majors. I do not have any other students in the lab who speak Chinese and who could be of help so I am concerned about your ability to succeed under these conditions. I will speak with several faculty members who may have some suggestions. It may be better for you to postpone going to an American graduate school until after you have additional English language training. I will let you know what I learn. You probably should go to the international student office website and look at what they say about language that might help you gain a better grasp of technical English.
