因为历史学在申请时就需找到future advisor.去年申请时便跟许多教授有信件往来 当时写信时常担心措辞是否得体与表达是否清楚等问题. 遂都请一位HE学姐帮我修改与重拟信件.以下分享文的想法也很多出自於她的见解 信寄出後.教授的回覆无论是否愿意收我.态度都很和善.而且回信率约有八成： 我申请八间共联络了10位教授（因有些学校需共同指导）.其中有八位回我 回的内容也颇详细.不是一句"题目很有趣.欢迎来申请"就打发掉了 我相信这结果除了拜指导教授名声所赐外(这些教授都认识我的硕论指导). 信件内容也帮了不少忙^^ 因此以下按照申请时序列出当时的信件模版.希望能帮助以後申请的版友 ****************************************************************************** 申请前 1.自我介绍信 信件主旨: Prospective Student Interested in (XX领域) 信件内容:（因为BBS版面的关系.一行只列一句.实际寄信时不需如此） Dear Prof. XXX: I am a MA student majoring in 大领域 at XX校名. I am writing to you because I am looking for PhD programs in the US that are strong in 大领域中的次领域. My MA thesis, supervised by 教授全名 (from the X机构), focuses on 一句话. For the doctoral study, I want to work on (XX Topics), especially 一句话. (若博士题目无法缩成一句.可试试以下写法: For the doctoral study, I would like to continue my research onto the (X Topics), focusing on 次主题（一小句话）. My intention is to make use of A类资料 in addition to B类资料 to examine A主题（名词片语） as well as B主题（名词片语）.) I am considering applying for the progame of 所申请学校, but I am not quite sure if my research interest matches that of the faculty of your XX department. Could you possibly advise me on the application? Thank you very much. （若担心教授不喜欢你的题目.可换成这句： I am about to send out my application to X学校, and would like to know if you think my proposed topic a feasible one, or if you would give me some advice on related subjects.） I thank you very much for taking the time to read this far. Best regards. 名字 拟信时的一些想法： 1.寄件时间至少在申请截止日的一个月前.这样一个礼拜後教授若未回信.还可以再寄一次 不过我的经验是有回信习惯的教授.收信时就会回了.不回的再怎麽寄也没用 提早寄的最主要好处是：还可以根据教授的意见来修改SOP.或直接再找其他教授联络 2.最好先写出SOP和Writing Sample再联络. 有时教授会希望看看你写的东西.如果有份草稿至少可以先寄给他顶一下. 3.并非一定要说些仰慕教授与对他研究多有兴趣的话 教授都很忙.也在申请季收过无数的类似信件.因此很清楚学生写这些信的目的 故假如他对你的题目有兴趣.自然会回. 反之.如果没兴趣.说再多的仰慕之语也只是浪费彼此时间而已 以下是主干模版填字後的情况：（姓名与校名皆已删除） I am a MA student majoring in pre-modern Chinese history at X University. I am writing to you because I am looking for PhD programs in the US that are strong in gender history. My MA thesis, supervised by XXX (from the XXX), focuses on the how medical discourses, influenced by Confucian values in the early imperial China, constructed cultural distinctions between the male and female body. For the doctoral study, I want to work on masculinity, especially the use of medical knowledge in the cultural construct of the ideal male body and masculine physical gestures during the Sung dynasty. 以下信件都是直接根据教授对此信的回覆来回应.故未另拟信件主旨 **************************************************************************** 2.教授回应：客套.欢迎.拒绝 信件内容： Thanks very much for your advice. I hope to have the chance of working with you at X大学 next year. 关於教授的回信.我遇到的情况是.教授通常不会明白的拒绝或收人 只能根据某些线索.推测教授的回应类别： 1.欢迎： 这个最好认.如果教授信里有提到他目前所收的博班学生的研究领域. 并祝你在该校找到坚实的同好.就表示他应该是真的想收你 2.客套： 这种最常遇到.通常会介绍该系所与你领域有关的各个教授.并祝你申请顺利 3.拒绝： 乍看之下会很想客套信.不过信中会说他只能指导某某面向. 暗示他无法直接当你的指导教授 （共同指导的回信请看下文） 其实在申请前联络教授主要是为了试探SOP的写作方针是否需要修改. 所以不用期待教授欢迎你就表示一定可以拿到入学许可 最後还是要看SOP与其他申请来决定结果 *************************************************************************** 3.教授想多了解你.要约时间谈谈 My phone number is +886 XXX, and I'm available (specific weekdays and hours). Or, do you need me to call you? 之後就见招拆招啦～ *************************************************************************** 4.教授说想收你.但明年休假.请你後年再申请 信件内容： Thanks very much for your kind reply. I will wait and apply next year. 拟信时的一些想法： 1.不必告诉他若你今年申请其他学校不上.明年就会再申请该校之类的话 这样常会自贬身价.说得自己好像没人要似的 2.假如预算够也能接受第一年指导教授不在校的话. 建议一方面如此回覆教授.一方面仍然申请该校 因为若教授真想收你.他还是有可能录取你 ************************************************************************* 5.教授说想收你.但须共同指导 遇到这种情况时. 我会先写信联络其他教授询问是否愿意共同指导.等找到人後.再回覆原教授 虽然这样一来一往时间拖的有点长. 但看原教授的回信.她似乎不介意我拖了快两周才回信XD 找另一外教授时的战略： 1.先向师长打听该教授的个性.是否介意共同指导.以及指导风格等事. 如果该教授对学生的研究控制颇多的话.要考虑是否为合适的共同指导人选 2.第一封信如第一封自我介绍信. 3.若他对你的题目表示兴趣.第二封再提双指导的事情 不过要小心语气与措辞.不能让他觉得或发现（？）你是为了凑双指导才找他的 第二封信的内容如下： Thanks very much for your kind reply. I've contacted Prof. XX. She/he told me that, if one of the faculties from XX系所 takes me in, she may able to co-supervise me. Do you mind if I tell her about our conversation? Or do you want me to wait until you've received my application? 因为我後来联络的共同指导教授很爽快的答应了. 我便谢谢他并向原教授回覆这好消息.双方信件也就此结束 ************************************************************************* 6.教授说想收你.但不喜欢你的题目 虽然这句话的中文逻辑颇为矛盾.但我真的遇到教授这样回信了 Orz 我的回答策略是： 1.解释为何选此题目：例如之前的修课与论文写作经验使我对此题目较有心得 2.说明我不会因此划地自限：到美国後还是会学习不同领域 3.说明为何想到外国进修 以下是当初的回信内容： Thanks very much for your reply. The topic mentioned in the previous e-mail, which you consider too narrow, is an issue that I have surveyed and worked on more comprehensively. I think I will continue to be interested in the fields of XX, but this doesn't mean that I'll definitely choose this topic for PhD dissertation. In fact, I hope very much to combine my MA training in Taiwan, which focused more on working with primary sources, with the resources available in the States, and gradually define my future research interest during the first three years of doctoral study. I look particularly forward to learning more about XX theories and interdisciplinary studies. And this is the main reason that I want to go to the States for PhD study. I just received the admission to your PhD program in XXX领域. 问奖学金： But the letter has no mention of funding opportunities. Could you please tell me if the admission comes with a full or partial funding package? 确认指导教授： None of the faculty has contacted me about this admission. Could you tell me who will become my advisor if I decide to go to XX学校? 问Open House补助与改期拜访 I'm very excited about the admission and do want to meet with the faculty and graduate students. However, as I 原因, I can't attend the Open House next week. Is it possible to arrange a visit in 时间 ? And, does the department provide reimbursement for the flight ticket? 2.问指导教授有关奖学金的事情 信件内容如下： I'm very excited about the admission. However, XX系办人名 told me that my admission doesn't include any funding package.
