美国(全球)特殊教育的组织AAMR(American Association of Mental Retardation)，
在2007年正式改名为AAIDD
(American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities)。
新名称的含义为何? Steven J. Taylor说：
"The term intellectual and developmental disabilities is simply less
stigmatizing than mental retardation,
mental deficiency, feeble-mindedness, idiocy, imbecility,
and other terminology we have cast aside over the years."
简而言之，就是减少标签及污名化的作用。
