避免强烈的星际物质吸收
因为越靠近银河盘面 (低银纬), 星际物质越多. 而星际物质越多,
造成的消光就越严重, 这将会导致在银河盘面较暗的星体无法被观测
到.
星际消光对可见光观测的影响很大, 一些浓密的分子云可以消光好几
个星等, 近红外的的观测结果 (例如2MASS) 会有助於解决这个问题
